Sustainability in Business: Our Award-Winning Green Practices
We're thrilled to announce that we have won the prestigious Sustainable Green Investment Award at the Hampshire Business Awards, recognising our leadership in sustainability. This milestone reflects our innovative green construction practices and commitment to creating a sustainable future.
The judges were impressed by our significant strides in reducing emissions, enhancing biodiversity, and pioneering green practices within a traditionally high-impact industry. They recognised our leadership, innovation, and community collaboration, setting a new benchmark for sustainable progress.
Our Sustainability Journey in the Construction Industry
As a leading supplier of construction materials, we operate across multiple sites, including quarries, production depots, concrete plants, builders' merchants, and a recycling centre.
Over the past year, we've made significant strides:
- Reduced our Carbon Footprint: We've implemented innovative strategies to reduce CO2 emissions, including fleet updates and energy-efficiency measures.
- Enhanced Renewable Energy: We've increased our reliance on renewable energy sources to power our operations.
- Minimised Waste: We've reduced landfill waste and maximised recycling efforts through our waste recycling facility.
- Prioritised Employee Well-being: We've invested in employee well-being initiatives, including mental health support programs.
- Conserved Water: We've implemented water-saving measures to reduce consumption.
- Fostered Community Partnerships: We've collaborated with local organisations, community groups, and schools to promote sustainability.
- Increased Biodiversity: We've taken advanced steps to enhance biodiversity on our sites.
Key Biodiversity Initiatives
Working across many of its sites, biodiversity achievements include:
- Planting areas into flower-rich meadows and new woodlands.
- Working with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust we planted an orchard involving local schools.
- Working with local Conservation Groups we improved wetland areas and bird habitats.
- In conjunction with the Mens Shed, we constructed a House Martin Tower to support the declining House Martin population.
- Local Conservation Groups started regular surveys of butterflies and moths across our quarries.
Reducing Our Carbon Footprint with Sustainable Business Practices
Our commitment to sustainability is deeply ingrained in our company culture. Led by our Senior Leadership Team, we've implemented a robust Environmental Management System (EMS) certified to ISO 14001 and held since 2010. This system ensures that we consistently meet regulatory expectations and minimise our environmental impact.
We're incredibly proud of this achievement and remain dedicated to driving sustainable practices within our industry. By working together, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Rob Flower, MD commented; "We're incredibly honoured to receive this award. It holds special significance because, as a construction materials provider with quarries, concrete plants, a waste recycling facility, and a fleet of lorries, sustainability isn't always the first thing people associate with us. However, we're dedicated to making a positive impact. From harnessing alternative energy sources like solar power and minimising water usage in our production processes, to maximising recycling through our waste facility, and reducing emissions, we're committed to sustainable practices. This dedication has helped us become industry leaders and positively contribute to our community."
