Why use recycled aggregates?

As the cost of living rises and the focus on sustainability becomes greater, many of us are looking for ways to both save money and be more environmentally friendly. Every year, approximately 250 million tonnes of aggregates are used in Great Britain*, they are essential ingredients in building our houses, offices, roads, and even play areas. So, considering how important aggregates are, why not make sure we are using them in the most sustainable way?

What are recycled aggregates?

Recycled aggregates are materials repurposed from construction sites into usable aggregates for further construction projects. Things like used concrete can be taken, crushed, and turned into fill materials such as 6F5 crushed concrete.

Are they cheaper to buy?

Recycled aggregates are cost-effective because there are no new/raw materials used, meaning less production costs.

Will the quality be different?

Recycled aggregates are just materials that have not been newly dug, so the quality and performance are not compromised. Although these would not be used for decorative purposes, they are great for use in anything from a subbase, fill material, or soakaway, to bedding paving slabs, mixing concrete, or an oversite.

What are the sustainability benefits?

We can’t negate the need for primary resources but by reusing aggregates, we can help reduce the number of natural resources used, the production associated in making the products, and, in most cases, reduce transport emissions, as recycled aggregates are available locally.

Using recycled aggregates over primary materials will also help us to reach the United Nations net-zero 2050 targets.

Matt Lock, Commercial Director NMSB comments; “By the very nature of our operations, we are extremely focussed on environmental sustainability, with a target to produce as much recycled aggregate as we can. We have had some fantastic feedback on the quality of our products and hope for it to become as trusted as our primary materials.”

Wright Morgan who has recently completed a new Aldi store at Parley commented; “the recycled Type 1 is by far the best quality material we have ever used.”
